In Chinese, there are several ways to express approximate numbers, known as 概数表示法 (gàishù biǎoshì fǎ). Here are the main methods:

1. Using "大概", "大约", and "几"

These words are commonly used to indicate an approximation:

• 大概 (dàgài): roughly, probably

• Example: 这个手机大概两千块。 (This phone is roughly 2000 yuan.)

• 大约 (dàyuē): approximately

• Example: 我的中文老师大约三十岁。 (My Chinese teacher is approximately 30 years old.)

• 几 (jǐ): a few, several

• Example: 我上网买了几本书。 (I bought a few books online.)

2. Using Adjacent Numerals Together

Adjacent numerals can be combined to express an approximate range:

• 三四 (sān sì): three or four
• 十五六 (shí wǔ liù): fifteen or sixteen
• 七八十 (qī bā shí): seventy or eighty
• 五六百 (wǔ liù bǎi): five or six hundred

These combinations indicate a range of numbers rather than a specific value.

3. Using "左右" and "前后"

The phrases "左右" (zuǒyòu) and "前后" (qiánhòu) are also used to express approximate numbers:

• 左右 (zuǒyòu): around, about

• Example: 三十岁左右 (around 30 years old)

• 前后 (qiánhòu): before and after

• Example: 春节前后 (before and after the Spring Festival)
