Understanding 连动句 (Lian Dong Ju) in Chinese

连动句, or "serial verb constructions," are a unique feature of Chinese grammar where two or more verbs are used in succession to express a sequence of actions. This structure can convey different relationships between the actions, primarily focusing on how one action relates to another.

There are two main types of 连动句:

  1. The first action describes the manner of the second action: In this case, the first verb modifies how the second action is performed. For example:
  2. 他笑着说:“没事儿。” (He said, "It's nothing," while smiling.)
  3. 我明天坐飞机去北京。 (I will fly to Beijing tomorrow.)

Here, "笑着" (smiling) describes the manner in which he is speaking, and "坐飞机" (fly) indicates the way of traveling to Beijing.

  1. The second action is the purpose of the first action: In this scenario, the first verb indicates the intention behind the second action. For example:
  2. 他去超市买水果。 (He went to the supermarket to buy fruit.)
  3. 我来中国学习中文。 (I came to China to study Chinese.)

In these examples, "买水果" (buy fruit) is the purpose of going to the supermarket, and "学习中文" (study Chinese) is the reason for coming to China.

Understanding these structures helps learners grasp the nuances of action relationships in Chinese, enhancing both comprehension and expression in the language.
