Duration Complement in Chinese

In Chinese, the structure known as "数量补语5" (duration complement) is used to express the time interval from the completion of an action to a specific point in time. This is typically formed by combining a verb with a time duration complement, indicating how long it has been since the action was completed.

The structure is as follows: Verb + Duration Complement + 了. The duration complement specifies the length of time that has elapsed since the action was completed.

Examples:

  1. 他们来中国两个月了。
(Tāmen lái Zhōngguó liǎng gè yuè le.)
"They have been in China for two months."
Here, "来" (come) is the verb, and "两个月" (two months) is the duration complement, indicating the time since they arrived.

  2. 哥哥去北京一个星期了。
(Gēge qù Běijīng yī gè xīngqī le.)
"My brother has been in Beijing for a week."
In this sentence, "去" (go) is the verb, and "一个星期" (one week) serves as the duration complement.

  3. 我父母结婚二十年了。
(Wǒ fùmǔ jiéhūn èrshí nián le.)
"My parents have been married for twenty years."
Here, "结婚" (get married) is the verb, and "二十年" (twenty years) indicates the duration since their marriage.

This grammatical structure is essential for expressing the duration of actions in relation to the present moment, providing clarity and context in conversations about time.
