Understanding 递进复句 (Progressive Compound Sentences)

递进复句, or progressive compound sentences, are a type of sentence structure in Chinese that express an increasing degree or intensity of an idea. They can be formed either with or without conjunctions.

(1) Without Conjunctions

In this structure, two independent clauses are connected without the use of conjunctions. The second clause typically elaborates on or intensifies the idea presented in the first clause.

Examples:

(I have been to that place; I have been there twice.)

(2) With Conjunctions

In this structure, conjunctions are used to explicitly indicate the progressive relationship between the clauses. Common conjunctions include 更 (gèng, "even more") or 还 (hái, "also") for intensifying, and 不但 (bùdàn, "not only")...而且 (érqiě, "but also") for adding information.

Examples:

(It was very cold yesterday; today it is even colder.)

In summary, 递进复句 allows for the expression of ideas that build upon each other, either through simple juxtaposition or through the use of conjunctions to clarify the relationship between the clauses.
